Super 8mm film is a motion picture film format that was popularized in the 1960s and 1970s. Its a smaller format compared to the standard 8mm film, and offers higher image quality.
Super 8 film initially became a popular choice for capturing wedding videos due to its portability, ease of use, and aesthetic qualities. It has a distinct nostalgic and vintage look with its characteristic grain, vibrant colors, and occasional light leaks. These visual characteristics evoke a sense of nostalgia and romance, making it an especially appealing choice for capturing special moments like weddings.

16mm cine-film is a motion picture film format that uses 16mm-wide film stock to capture images and create motion pictures. It has been widely used in the past for various professional filmmaking purposes, including movies, documentaries, newsreels, and more.
The allure of 16mm cine-film lies in its capacity to deliver superior image quality and versatility when compared to Super 8.
With its wider 16mm film gauge, 16mm film offers greater resolution, clarity, and detail, making it an attractive choice for a variety of filmmaking applications, particularly love celebrations and wedding captures. 16mm cine-film combines excellent image quality with the medium's unique texture and grain structure, creating a distinctly sharp, yet simultaneously dreamy, organic, and timeless aesthetic.
What Is Hybrid Super 8/16mm & Digital Video?
Is There Sound In Your Films?
Can We Choose The Music In Our Film(s)?
Can Super 8 & 16mm Film Capture In Low Light Situations?
A hybrid Super 8mm and digital wedding video combines the nostalgic look and feel of Super 8mm and 16m cine-films with the convenience and versatility of digital video. Super 8mm and 16mm films are both motion picture formats that were popular in the past, known for their distinctive grain, color rendition, and vintage aesthetic. In recent years, there has been a resurgence in the use of analog cine-film for capturing weddings and other special events.
Our hybrid Super 8, 16mm, & digital wedding cinema is created capturing a combination of analog cine film and digital videography. The footage from all sources is then combined and edited together to create a cohesive and unique wedding video. Our Super 8mm & 16mm films include 2k digital scans, which can be upgraded to 4k or 6.5k at an additional cost. We also return film negatives to clients for future scanning and archival purposes -- these negatives are a lossless physical keepsake which will last lifetimes.
The Super 8mm & 16mm film footage adds a retro and nostalgic touch to the video, giving it a timeless quality and a vintage look. The film's grain, color saturation, and texture contribute to a distinct visual aesthetic that many couples find appealing. On the other hand, the digital footage provides the advantages of modern video technology, such as high-definition resolution, easier editing, and immediate accessibility.
By combining Super 8mm, 16mm film, and digital video, couples can have the best of both worlds—the classic charm of film and the convenience of digital technology. The resulting wedding video offers a blend of old and new, creating a memorable and artistic representation of your special day.
Our wedding videography is captured using primarily vintage film cameras, which produce silent film footage or select sound captures which may or may not be usable. However our select digital video captures do include audio, which when applicable is integrated into your film in an organic way.
Along with any digital audio captured candidly throughout your day, we also utilize a paid library of extensive licensed music options for the films we create.
Vow or speech overlays are not typically our style of wedding cinema, however a full length ceremony video (recorded on professional audio equipment) is included with most of our hybrid wedding video commissions. This is also available as an add-on to any analog cine-still or photo only booking.
We take into consideration your unique story, the energy of your wedding, and your general vibe as a couple when selecting the music utilized in your films. However, if you have a specific song or genre of music you’d like utilized in your films, just let us know and and we’ll be glad to work with you to make it happen!
The short answer is YES! We are professional wedding documenters and capturing film in low light is often part of that job!
In low light conditions, Super 8mm & 16mm film both require additional lighting to achieve better results. We use external lighting sources such as professional video lights or utilizing well-lit areas of the venue as needed. We also utilize a variety of Super 8 and 16mm film stocks, including certain stocks which perform better when capturing ambient light or in low lighting conditions. This helps to ensure beautiful, well-lit captures of your precious wedding memories!
