If you’re dreaming of an "I Do" that feels more like a getaway to a European cathedral than a trip to a government building, look no further than 4th Street. Minneapolis City Hall wedding ceremonies are STUNNINGGGGG !!! As we move through 2026, the "City Hall Chic" trend is stronger than ever. Couples are trading massive guest lists for high-fashion photography and architectural grandeur. The Minneapolis Municipal Building (our local Romanesque masterpiece) offers a level of "wow factor" usually reserved for luxury hotels, but with the historic soul of the Twin Cities.
At Storyteller Co Weddings, we’ve captured countless love stories within these granite walls. Here is your definitive, up-to-date guide on how to make your City Hall wedding a reality this year.
How to Get Married at Minneapolis City Hall: A 2026 Guide
1. Apply for a Marriage License
First, you’ll need to apply for your license through Hennepin County.
- The Process: You can start your application online to save time, but you must appear in person to finalize it
- The Cost: For 2026, the standard fee is $125. However, if you complete 12 hours of premarital education, the fee is reduced to $50
- The Validity: Your license is valid for six months and can be used anywhere in the state of Minnesota
2. Book Your Ceremony at City Hall
To reserve your space in the historic Rotunda, you’ll need to visit the Municipal Building Commission (MBC) weddings and ceremonies page on their official website.
Pro Tip: Because of its popularity for "micro-weddings" and elopements, we recommend checking availability at least 4–6 months in advance.
3. Choose Your Date + Time
The City Hall Rotunda is a working public space, but they offer dedicated windows for weddings. Currently, the space is available for ceremonies Wednesday through Sunday.
- Mid-week weddings offer a quieter, more intimate feel
- Weekend ceremonies allow for that grand, classic wedding day energy
5. Choose Your Date + Time
The beauty of Minneapolis City Hall is that it doesn’t need much extra to shine. Between the five-story fireplace and the colossal "Father of Waters" statue, the architecture does the heavy lifting.
Decor: A few personal floral touches or simple handheld arrangements are really all you need.
The Visuals: Photo ops and cinematic motion are truly magical in that central rotunda! From the "stained glass windows" (which are actually lit by artificial bulbs so they shine regardless of the time of day your ceremony will be held) to the defending marble staircases and nostalgic elevators - this space is a romantic dream for images!
Important Note: Ceremonies held in the City Hall Rotunda do not include an officiant. You will need to arrange for an ordained professional, a certified friend, or a family member to perform the ceremony.
If you prefer to be married by a judge at the District Court, see the list of Hennepin County Judges currently available to perform wedding ceremonies here. Call 612-322-6709 or visit the Marriage Ceremonies page on the Hennepin County website for more information - a note that many judges will be more than happy to perform your ceremony in the rotunda if it is available.
A historic mention as well that the Minneapolis City Hall is where the first day of legal same-sex wedding ceremonies in Minneapolis occurred, just after midnight on August 1, 2013, primarily in the rotunda and city council chambers of Minneapolis City Hall. Mayor R.T. Rybak officiated a marathon of 46 weddings, with the first couple being Margaret Miles and Cathy ten Broeke, following the law’s official taking-effect.
The After-Party: Where to Toast & Dine
Minneapolis City Hall is strictly ceremony-only, so once you’ve tied the knot, you’ll want to head somewhere else to celebrate. Fortunately, downtown and the nearby riverfront are full of excellent restaurants perfect for a post-wedding gathering.
Here are a few of our top spots for an after-elopement dinner celebration:
- Porzana: (The Gold Standard) A modern take on an Argentinian parrillada. Between the rare wagyu cuts and the "Flora Room" downstairs for late-night cocktails, it’s the ultimate post-City Hall destination for foodies.
- Mara: Upscale Mediterranean-inspired dining inside the Four Seasons. Pure luxury for a refined celebration - by culinary mastermind Gavin Kaysen
- Spoon and Stable: A North Loop icon for a reason. Gavin Kaysen’s flagship offers a refined, airy, and high-fashion atmosphere. It’s "Minneapolis Excellence" personified — perfect for a couple that wants a polished, James Beard-level dinner.
- Gai Noi: Located right on Loring Park, this is the ultimate spot for a couple that wants a "vacation" vibe without leaving the city. Ann Ahmed’s Laotian masterpiece is bright, filled with lush greenery, and offers a rooftop with some of the best skyline views in Minneapolis.
- Owamni: James Beard-winning modern Indigenous cuisine located right on the riverfront with breathtaking views
- Chloe by Vincent: A chic French bistro that feels like a hidden gem, perfect for intimate wedding dinners
- Bûcheron: Located just a short hop from downtown, this is for the couple that wants "refined-bistro" energy. It’s intimate, French-technique-driven, and has a quietly confident, high-design interior that looks incredible in photos.
- Sanjusan: Another Daniel del Prado masterpiece. It’s an Italian-Japanese fusion spot that is sleek, trendy, and serves up "pizza and pasta"
- Ruth’s Chris Steak House: A classic celebration staple with elegant private dining and impeccable service
- Butcher’s Tale: Known for its craft cocktails, house-smoked meats, and a modern ambiance that feels both cool and sophisticated
- Boludo: For an intimate, vintage parlor-inspired vibe and the absolute best Argentinian empanadas and pizza in the city
