Why We Left The World of News Photojournalism to Steward Your Bespoke Wedding Legacy
From Global Frontlines to Private Archives
Before we were the documentation duo behind Storyteller Co, my wife and I were full-time photojournalists. Our subjects ranged from world diplomats and famous artists to the front lines of global movements in some of the most rural corners of the map. Our work lived in the pages of Forbes, NBC, Newsweek, and beyond.
We loved the depth. We loved the raw, "i-spy," documentary nature of the job — even when the risk was exceptionally challenging. But eventually, we hit a wall.
It wasn’t the challenge that stopped us; it was a realization about stewardship. In traditional editorial journalism, the "story" almost always comes before the person. We found ourselves valuing the privacy and personal space of our subjects far more than the industry standard required. We wanted to document real, unscripted human connection without it needing to be public property.
The Rise of the "Content Day" Wedding
We transitioned to weddings because we believe in the sanctity of the private moment. However, we’ve noticed a jarring trend in the industry: Weddings are increasingly being treated like "content days" for vendors. We see teams bringing in their own separate documentation crews just to film "behind the scenes" for TikTok and Reels, often at the expense of the couple's actual experience. It is the exact opposite of why we do this work.
Your wedding isn’t a performance for our portfolio; it’s a private, lived-in archive for your family’s legacy. For our couples, this documentation is a massive emotional investment — not a marketing tool for the internet at large.
Discretion as the Standard: A New Way to Document
Because of our "person-first" background, we have built Discretion as the Standard into every commission we take. We believe that for couples who want to live within their unfolding (and always fleeting!) memories, setting a perimeter of privacy is the best way to actually be present.
If you’re feeling pressured by vendors and creative teams to be "visible," and don't want to be, here is how we design client privacy to keep the focus on the art and the intimacy of the day:
- Selective Identity Privacy: We share the "vibe," the architecture, and the editorial details. But zero faces of minors, high-profile guests, or family members ever hit our public grid without explicit consent.
- Publication Embargoes: We believe in keeping everything under wraps until you’ve had time to live with the memories first. We don't rush a "sneak peek" just to chase engagement numbers on a Tuesday afternoon.
- Full NDA Compliance: Some of the most avant-garde, emotionally-charged, stunning weddings we document will never be seen by anyone but the couple and their inner circle. That’s the job. Our priority is the energy of an event for the people who were in the room, not for the likes and reposts.
- Creative Partnership: For couples who do want an intentional rollout to share with their community, we collaborate. We plan the social and blog posts with you and your creative team to ensure the story told is the one you actually want to share.
Your Story is Yours
At the end of the day, if a photographer makes you feel like your wedding is just a backdrop for their brand, they’ve missed the point of documentary art.
